The Siouxland Boys Choir began in 1988 with the hope that it would provide local communities a unique opportunity for music education in their area. Much work was done in the beginning to assemble a board of directors, as well as establish non-profit status.

The literature chosen each semester varies from classical to contemporary, and sacred to secular. Each semester the choir memorizes 11-13 pieces, and performs 4-5 concerts. Occasionally the group has the opportunity to perform with other organizations. Such appearances have included a performance with the Northwest Iowa Symphony Orchestra, and our annual participation in the Kidzsing Festival, where we perform with 6-8 children's choirs from around the Midwest.

At the end of the Spring semester, the choir goes on a 3-5 day tour. Past tours have included Omaha, Kansas City, Michigan, the Black Hills, Minneapolis, Colorado, Wisconsin, and Branson. Some of our tour highlights include singing our National Anthem for a Minnesota Twins game, as well as a Denver Rockies game. We have also visited several aviation museums, as well as the Ford Museum in Dearborn, MI. Wherever we go on tour, we also perform 3-4 concerts in local churches and retirement facilities.

Auditions for the choir are held the last week in August and the third week in January. The choir is limited to 40 members.

Commitment is high from the parents as well as the boys. This is due to the fact that parents see how much their son(s) learn and grow, and look forward to coming to rehearsals. They also become leaders in their schools and churches. The choir consists of boys from public schools, Christian schools, and those that are home-schooled.

Recently the choir has expanded their resources by including the opportunity for corporate sponsorship giving. Sponsorships have aided the choir's budget in addition to monies collected through dues, concerts, and fundraisers.

The Siouxland Boys Choir have developed into a solid program. This year, Mrs. Alicia (Mulder) Geleynse is directing the choir.
Mrs. Geleynse graduated from Dordt College in 2006 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education. She is currently the fourth grade teacher at Rock Valley Christian School. During her time at Dordt, Mrs. Geleynse was very much involved in the music program, accompanying both choirs and soloists. The primary emphasis of the Siouxland Boys Choir is to teach the boys the importance of proper vocal technique, reading and interpreting music, and performance.
